Looking down into Round Valley from the Pacific Crest Trail north of I-80

The trails covered in this section are primarily north of Tahoe and Interstate Highway 80, mostly also somewhat to the west of Tahoe.  These trails are located away from Lake Tahoe itself, but in National Forest areas dotted with clear cool lakes and forests, and gently sloping ridges with views of the northern Sierra range.  One of the trails, Mt. Rose, is to the north and east of Lake Tahoe, on this dominant peak just across the border in Nevada.  The rest of the trails are located in California.

The lake area north of I-80 is not a designated wilderness area, but it has the feel of a roadless wilderness.  The trails are typically not as high or steep as those closer to Lake Tahoe, and the crowds are generally smaller as well.  Many of the lakes are wrapped in granite shoreline, providing convenient shelves for sunbathing or starting a warm summer day's swim.  There are travelers' facilities in the nearby Soda Springs village and Truckee.

   Location

The trails in this area north of Lake Tahoe are accessed mainly from smaller roads located off of I-80, which traverses east - west across northern California.  Many of the trails are reached from Grouse Ridge road, which can be accessed from the I-80 exit near its junction with the eastern end of State Highway 20.  Other trails are reached from side roads off Highway 89, and a few are immediately off exit ramps from I-80 itself.  The maps below give an overview of these trails' general locations.
